Small businesses should always be thinking of creative advertising ideas and be willing to think outside of the box. Most businesses do not think about using the local media but it can be very powerful if used the right way. One way to use the media is when you first open your buisness or within the first couple of months. Most local newspapers have a section on new businesses and if you call or email the news department and tell them what you are doing, you have a great chance of them writing a story about your business.
Keep in mind that you need to be excited about the business you are opening and explain why your business is a good thing for the city. If you just say I am opening a flower shop so please do a story on me, that probably will not get their attention. Make it exiting and tell them your background and how you came this position. If you have been in business for while, then send letters covering topics related to your business to local publications. Connect your product or business to some current event that is making news. If you do this over time you will be seen as the expert in your field and you will find your articles being publised, along with your name and business.
TV Advertising
The same goes for your local television stations. Now this can be more difficult, but not impossible. Especially when you first start a business. The early morning news usually has a decent audience and they are always looking for topics to do segments on. Wait for a time when your business relates to something coming up in the community. For example, if you have a retail painting business, the spring might be a good time to reach out to stations about doing a story on you. Maybe ask them if they have a spring cleaning or home improvment segment where you could come in a show some examples of easy ways to spruce up rooms in their homes. Remember, be creative and sound like an expert in your field and you will find yourself using the media for some free advertising.
